OVERVIEW
Originally invented by Reginald Fessenden in 1901 as a means to assist in hearing certain radio transmissions, Heterodyning involves creating two new frequencies from two input frequencies. One of the new frequencies is the sum of the two inputs, and the other is the difference. So, for example, if you have one input tone of 440 Hertz, and another of 643 Hertz, the resulting heterodyned frequencies will be 1,083 Hz (the sum), and 203 Hertz (the difference). The original signals are no longer present.
While the new frequencies are obviously exactly calculable, they seem somewhat random until you’re used to the process. Superhet allows you to create heterodyned frequencies using only a MIDI keyboard, and also includes a switchable pitch envelope, and ADSR controls for amplitude.
Experiment with it at first, then as you get used to the process, start creating new types of music that have never before been heard,
to experiment with, which will help you see what’s happening.
We STRONGLY Suggest that you read the manual to discover innovative ways of using Superhet, and what the controls are for.
to determine which MIDI note numbers are closest to the resulting heterodyned pitches. Keep in mind that the sum and difference results are not exact pitches in the 12-tone scale. This will result in very interesting shrink and stretch tunings. Can be sorted, filtered and searched. Very useful for creating new melodies, or decoding existing ones.
Loading your own samples is easy! The process is outlined in the manual, and here’s a sample JSON file for you to edit for your own samples.
